Christmas
Cheers
The
Christmas party season began early this year in Marylebone, with a wine
tasting event hosted by Hay Hill Gallery. Amongst the elegant sculptures and
ethereal paintings of Moskvitina, members of Bellevue's Le Grande Societe
were welcomed by Conor Davies, Jean-Francois Boras and Tom Harrow. The
guests enjoyed numerous glasses of the Domaine de Bellevue Clairet, and the
Les Ancres de Bellevue 2010. There was also a chance to sample the La Grand
Cuvée de Bellevue, vintages 2006/09 and the exclusive Merlot Cuvée from
2009, of which only 600 bottles have ever been made.
Tasting Notes:
Les Ancres de Bellevue Clairet
‘Clear,
bright, beautiful strawberry colour. Raspberry and Blackberry nose with
light notes of milk. The wine is balanced, pleasant, with a burst of very
tasty fruit that gives gradually to a beautiful structure.’
Les Ancres de Bellevue Côtes de Bordeaux 2010
‘A
beautiful ruby red colour turning towards garnet. At first the nose reveals
animal notes, wood and vanilla. The second nose suggests notes of roasted
coffee and cocoa. The palate is crisp, with aromas of cherries and vanilla,
with tannins present on the finish. The wine demands several years for full
expression, the tannins will relax and open up the flavours.’
Domaine de Bellevue le Grand Cuvée 2006
‘This
millesime is very balanced. The nose is oaky with scents of blackcurrant
fruits, the mouth is delicate and well-balanced with an aromatic complexity
and a long finish. Aeration gives way to notes of black fruits, prunes in
Armagnac, vanilla and tobacco. This vintage begins to show maturity, with
the development of all the flavours, complexity and a flexible structure.
A wine with sensitivity.’
2009 Domaine de Bellevue Le Grand Cuvée
‘Deep
garnet in colour, the nose evokes leather, ripe fruit and cassis, combined
with roasted notes. The mouth is round with soft tannins. This wine is
smooth, balanced, with slight astringency on the finish due to its young
age.’
About Domaine de Bellevue & WineChap:
The
Domaine de Bellevue is a ‘renaissance’ vineyard overlooking the banks of
Bordeaux’s Garonne River. Originally classified in 1647, Bellevue ceased
production in the early 1960s and remained uncultivated until the turn of
the century. A project jointly spearheaded by Jean-Francois Boras, Tim
Griffiths and Conor Davey, it has been restored and cultivated under the
guidance of Kees Van Leeuwen, (formerly technical director of Cheval Blanc).
In order to offer participation in this exciting and unique venture, Boras,
Griffiths and Davey founded Le Grand Société du Domaine de Bellevue,
a debenture membership club.
Le Grand
Société
recently celebrated its 5-year anniversary with a founder members dinner at
Balthazar in London where WineChap was introduced as a new partner to
help take Bellevue to the next level. With a reputation for hosting unique
global wine experiences, unearthing fantastic producers and building fine
wine portfolios, all with a refreshing side of humour and lack of pretence, WineChap is opening up their little black book and putting together
an enviable programme of events, tours and exclusive wine offers that will
ensure participation in Le Grand Société is more worthwhile than
ever.
Great
company and conversations fuelled by fine wine and canapés? We’ll drink to
that! Bottoms up!
