The Commandment
Stone, 70 high x 45 x 20 cm (base 33 x 20
cm), 2004
27.5 high x 18 x 8 inches (base 13 x 8inches)
Biblical Scripture:
“When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave
him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the
finger of God.”
EXODUS 31:18
Description of Sculpture:
Richard displays his control of anatomical accuracy by carving
out of stone the perfect hand of God holding a Commandment Tablet. The hand
rests on a stone base, with a swivel so that it can be turned in any direction.
Artist's Interpretation:
“I used stone instead of marble for this sculpture. Since God's
Commandment Tablets were made of stone, I felt that stone would be a more
appropriate medium than marble. This is the hand of a triumphant MOSES, who has
just received the coveted Commandment Tablets from God, and MOSES is filled with
success. Just as I tried to create pathos, anger and despair in MOSES hands in
“MOSES BETRAYED”, I have tried to portray exultation with this hand.”
