Adam - The Creation
Relief
Bronze, 38 x 20 cm, 2000
15 x 11 inches
Biblical Scripture:
“Then God
said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness … So God created man in his
own image, in the image of God he created him … the LORD God formed the man from
the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and
the man became a living being.”
GENESIS 1:26 - 2:7
Description of Sculpture:
The hand of
God coming out of the firmament fills the relief. This is the same hand of God
as in Richard’s bronze “And, God Said Let There Be Light!” Adam,
rising from the fetal position, emerges from God’s mighty hand.
Artist’s Interpretation:
“I was
inspired by Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel portrayal of God creating Adam, and
the effective use of touching hands. Since Adam was created in God’s image and
Adam is a part of God, as Adam slowly arises from the fetal position in God’s
hand, he raises his left arm, which at first glance appears to be a sixth finger
on God’s hand.”
