BRIAN MARTIN BROOKS
New Abstracts

Brooks’ practice bridges realism and abstraction, shaped by his Bauhaus training at Pratt Institute in the early 1970s and his contributions to Andy Warhol’s Factory during the same period. Bauhaus principles, especially the work of Joseph Albers, influenced his mastery of colour and design, while his time at the Factory, working on projects like the Chairman Mao series, sparked a fascination with blending mechanical processes and human craftsmanship.

Now incorporating digital processes into his pictorial practice, Brooks explores new ways to merge contemporary technology with traditional techniques. Since the 1990s, Brooks has embraced abstraction, exploring the dynamic interplay of shapes, colours, and lines. Inspired by figures like William Morris, Annie Albers, and Agnes Martin, his work celebrates imperfection and physicality. He draws a connection between abstraction and realism, likening the zoomed-in details of realistic art to abstract forms.
