JAMIE MCCARTNEY

'The Sum Of Our Parts'
 2 - 30 November 2022
10 Year Retrospective
Hay Hill Gallery presents a show highlighting a decade of Jamie McCartney's work with the human body from 2012 to 2022

Hay Hill Gallery were the first gallery to show The Great Wall of Vagina in our former premises on London's Cork Street, demonstrating a vision to curate groundbreaking shows. The publicity launched Jamie onto an international stage and into the limelight. Ten years later Jamie's work is shown internationally in museums, galleries and private collections. This show highlights some of the work created in during over the last decade. We are all greater than the sum of our parts.

Jamie is a professional, UK based artist. Working across several disciplines, his main focus is the human body, often sociopolitical, frequently sexual, never dull. A degree in Experimental Art from Hartford Art School in Connecticut, USA instilled in Jamie a desire to make meaningful art. It still informs much of his practice, which leans towards narrative and provocation with a hint of the absurd. He maintains close ties to the USA via his studio in South Florida.

Jamie has a multidisciplinary approach with a career-long commitment to experimentation, creating highly finished, museum-quality artworks. These include wall-mounted and free-standing sculptures, figurative bronzes, photographs, scanner photography, unusual whimsical constructions and his world famous crystal glass, plaster and resin genital castings.

Jamie’s iconic, ten-paneled artwork, The Great Wall of Vagina, was first exhibited in 2012 at Hay Hill Gallery on London’s Cork Street and later at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. This year’s museum exhibitions include, Brighton Museum, Mu-sex in Lisbon and the Wilzig Museum in Miami. Five years in the making and entirely self-funded, it was a passion project which has been consistently in the media since before it was even finished. It features in numerous sex education texts and is used by medical professionals the world over to reassure women as an alternative to unnecessary cosmetic surgery. As an artwork it succeeds as a visual spectacle whilst surreptitiously educating an unsuspecting public.

Jamie frequently appears in the media and at public events, discussing provocative subjects and his own controversial public work. He has gained an international reputation as a leading underground artist and is widely seen as a highly influential, art activist. As Art of England so aptly put it, ‘Like Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst… the world will be talking about Jamie McCartney for a long time to come.
