Believes That Porn is Art
The
Philosophical Society at Trinity College Dublin - Oct 3 2013 I was invited to
speak at The Phil on the motion "This house believes that porn is art".
Originally I was asked to speak against the motion but in the course of
constructing my arguments I decided that I couldn't and switched sides. I'm not
saying that porn is good or bad or harmful or whatever. That isn't the debate.
I'm saying that on a axis of variation from a simple nude image to hardcore
porn, wherever you you draw a line is just artifice based on your own beliefs
and prejudices. It is a continuum. Porn uses the same media as art, is often
created by artists and requires aesthetic decision making. So it is art. It may
not be good art but it is still art. Fascinating debate and a great evening with
a bunch of brilliant students and the very colourful character, brothel owner
